Step Into the Ancient World of Akrotiri
A tour of the archaeological site of Akrotiri, on Santorini, is a journey back in time for every visitor. Buildings and objects trapped under a thick layer of volcanic material have been preserved intact or have left their mark.
Life in the city came to an abrupt end in the last quarter of the 17th century BC, when its inhabitants decided to abandon it due to strong earthquakes. The volcanic eruption followed. The volcanic material that covered the city and the entire island has protected the buildings and their contents to this day, as was the case in Pompeii.
The settlement was one of the most important urban centres and ports of the Aegean during the Middle and Late Bronze Age (20th-17th century BC). It was a populous city covering 200 acres with an admirable social organization, public roads, a sewage system, sanitary facilities, and multi-story buildings. 5,000 vessels of various types and sizes, tools, figurines, ritual objects, and furniture that came to light during the excavations testify to the great development of the settlement. Food remains and animal bones help us reconstruct the dietary habits of the inhabitants. Impressive frescoes, which are the oldest examples of monumental painting in Greece, decorated almost all the building complexes, providing us with valuable information about the society of Akrotiri through their narrative character. The various materials and objects found there prove the relations and communication between Akrotiri and Minoan Crete, the Dodecanese, Cyprus, mainland Greece, as well as Egypt and Syria.
The buildings of Akrotiri are unique examples of impressive architecture. Magnificent buildings with carved facades housed community functions. Private houses, in addition to living quarters, had workshops and storage areas. The building materials came either from the island itself or were imported from other areas. Rocks from the quarries of Thera were the main building material. Pebbles and gravel were collected for use in walls and floors. Precious wood from Crete was used as a latticework framework in the walls, acting as seismic reinforcement. Plasterboard from the quarries of Knossos was laid on the floors over a substrate of crushed purple shells. Their expertise and good taste were evident in everything they did.

Culture In Santorini - Archaeological Museum Of Thira
The Archaeological Museum of Thera opened its doors with the women of the Cyclades, completely renovated, and aims to put Santorini back on the archaeological map with valuable treasures and a special exhibition entitled "Cycladic Women."
In one of the most privileged locations on the island, in Fira overlooking the Caldera, in the magnificent architecture of Konstantinos Dekavallas, the Archaeological Museum of Thera opened its doors with the women of the Cyclades.
With the "Daughter of Thera" as its central exhibit, this rare archaic masterpiece was inaugurated to tell the stories of the inhabitants of Ancient Thera and the women of the Cyclades, as evidenced by the beautiful treasures of the exhibition.
A highlight, for example, among the museum's treasures are the ceramics and pottery, most emblematic of which is the Thera amphora from the 7th century BC, with its characteristic geometric decoration. There are also countless treasures from the cemetery of ancient Thera that seal its history, as well as this huge volcanic stone, weighing half a ton, directly linked to the island's seismic activity, which will now stand proudly in its new home. If there is one thing that stands out in the new museum and triumphantly marks its reopening, it is the proud "Cycladic women."
They are the women of the Cyclades who make a difference and tell their stories through the centuries.
The new museum and the central exhibition marking its inauguration could not have any other protagonist than the famous "Daughter of Thera," the beautiful 2.48-meter-tall archaic statue made of Naxos marble, which was discovered in 2000 in Sellada, the necropolis of Ancient Thera.
Having undergone its own adventure, it now adorns the most prominent spot in the museum, becoming its trademark, as after the exhibition it will remain in its "home" and natural space as a permanent exhibit.
"This original exhibition presents the history of the Cyclades from a female perspective, highlighting the evolving and changing role of women in island societies from prehistory to post-Byzantine times. Through personal stories and lesser-known aspects of the female experience, it sheds light on issues such as identity, equality, participation, and autonomy.
It demonstrates how Cycladic women were sometimes constrained by social stereotypes and at other times played a dynamic leading role in family, religion, economy, and politics. It connects the past and the present, inviting the public to reflect on the timeless journey of women as bearers of tradition and change.
